A man who had already faced multiple health challenges was left coping with life-altering injuries – including the loss of his lower leg – following complications in his medical care.
Represented by Luke Menary of Liverpool Civil Law, the claimant brought a clinical negligence claim relating to his right transmetatarsal amputation, subsequent below-knee amputation, and ischaemic ulceration of the left foot. He was rendered wheelchair-bound and required adapted single-storey accommodation, specialist equipment, prosthetics, and ongoing care. He was already unfit for work due to significant co-morbidities.
There was notable disagreement between the parties’ medical experts, particularly around life expectancy – with the defendant contending the claimant would live fewer than five years.
Despite this, the case settled at a Joint Settlement Meeting for £470,000. The award provided for commercial care, future therapies, case management, holiday costs, and further accommodation adaptations – giving the claimant greater stability in the face of ongoing complexity and need.
This was a sensitive, high-value claim requiring careful navigation of both the medical evidence and the human story behind it. Luke Menary’s approach combined clarity, realism, and professional empathy – values that sit at the heart of Liverpool Civil Law’s ethos.
